As the Season Turns

This podcast is produced by Ffern, a natural fragrance-maker based in Somerset, in collaboration with Lia Leendertz, who writes the wonderful Almanac series of annual guides to the seasons. Each episode of As the Season Turns is released on the first of the month and follows the changing landscape of the seasons – from the moon and the stars, to the tides and the trees. It includes folk music (from Sam Lee in 2025) and Found Sounds recorded by Alice Boyd. I write and record sections about folklore, folk tales and foraging.

My 2025 contributions are all about foraging in the woods, drawing on the recipes for foods and remedies I make in real life. Examples include:

January – finding Jelly Ear fungus to make wild jelly sweets

February – picking Jack-by-the-Hedge to make wild dolmades

March – turning wild garlic leaves into a lacto-fermented pickle

April – foraging from trees to make oak leaf wine and beech leaf noyau

May – creating a heart tonic from new hawthorn leaves and buds

You can listen to new episodes of As the Season Turns and all those from previous years on the Ffern podcast page or via links on that page to the podcast on Spotify, Apple and Soundcloud.
