Writing librettos is a huge pleasure for me, and a huge responsibility. I love the density of this kind of writing; it is not poetry, as it has many other jobs to do, but it allows a condensing and intensity of rhythm and pattern that goes beyond what prose normally permits. Then I have the enormous privilege and joy of hearing my words sung and melded with music beyond my imagining.
